Crack. Rumble. Fly: The Bayview Stories Project

By Aleshea Harris

Directed by Tyrone Davis

Over the past two years, American Conservatory Theater’s Stage Coach Program has been developing programming and fostering relationships with community members from Bayview-Hunters Point in San Francisco. The Bayview Stories Project—the production of a new play about life in this community—is the cornerstone of the collaboration in Bayview. Through multiple story-circle workshops held in 2015, Bayview-Hunters Point residents of all ages shared their stories, dreams, questions, and connections.

Los Angeles–based commissioned playwright Aleshea Harris then used this material and the classic Greek play Oedipus Rex by Sophocles as inspiration for her playwriting process and worked with the community to shape the final script. The play ultimately aims to honor and celebrate the heart of the community as it relates both to its past, present, and future. The play addresses themes of displacement, marginalization, and police brutality within San Francisco’s African American community.

On June 4th, the cast will perform excerpts from the play. There will also be performances by Bayview artists and remarks from the play's director, Tyrone Davis.
