Giving Arts: A Black Philanthropy Month Celebration and Dialogue

African-American arts have an undeniable role in the success of America's black communities and our country -- from jazz to modern dance and more, black arts define the very essence of a uniquely American culture. However, despite this vital role, research suggests that only about 5% of the multi-billion black philanthropy economy gives to the arts. Our cultural institutions struggle throughout the nation.

"Giving Arts" is a Black Philanthropy Month convening and celebration of African-American and black diaspora giving, arts and culture.

The dialogue will be moderated by Jackie Copeland-Carson, Black Philanthropy Month Founder and Chair, Pan-African Women's Philanthropy Network, with a Keynote Address by actor and activist Danny Glover, and will be followed by a screening and discussion of award-winning filmmaker Pamela Harris' short film FARIAS: AN AFRO URUGUAYAN LOVE STORY.

In 2012, Harris embarked on a Fulbright Grant to Uruguay to gather documentary footage of the Afro Uruguayan population. People of African descent are more than 8% of the Uruguayan population, and yet their significant contributions to the nation's development remain largely hidden.

On this evening, Harris and her co-producer, Carolina De Robertis, will share the first fruits of their eighteen months of production in Uruguay. The short film transports viewers to the quiet rural town of Melo, where a man shares his memories of his mother who was, in her time, the last known living Uruguayan person born in slavery. What results is a nuanced meditation on mother-son love, the struggles of a people, and the deep connections between national histories and intimate life.

Special guest Ramón Farias, son of the film's protagonist, will join the filmmakers for the screening and discussion.

Pamela Harris is a documentary producer and director who has worked on projects including the Oscar-nominated Last Day of Freedom, and the PBS film Waging a Living, among others.

Carolina De Robertis is a novelist of Uruguayan origins whose books have been translated into seventeen languages and have received numerous honors and awards. They are a married couple and live in Oakland, California, with their two children.

This event is organized by MoAD and the Pan-African Women's Philanthropy Network and co-sponsored by Bay Area Blacks in Philanthropy and Bisemi.
