ONE WAY OR ANOTHER (Sara Gómez, 1974, 78 minutes)

Sara Gómez, the only Afro-Cuban woman in a leading role at the Cuban Film Institute during its early years, was a groundbreaking filmmaker with intersecting concerns: Afro-Cuban cultural traditions (including Abakúa and Santería), gender issues, workers’ rights, revolutionary social organization and the treatment of marginalized sectors of society. A relationship between Yolanda (a teacher) and Mario (an industrial worker) frames this film which combines documentary and fiction in a way that was radical for its time. Although Gómez died shortly before completing the film, her work remains among the most significant of the 20th century.
