Join MoAD for a reception and artist talk with Ebitenyefa Baralaye, one of four Emerging Artists Program 2018 winners. There will be a Q&A led by Nicole Archer and a performance by Punchcard Duo.

‍Ebitenyefa Baralaye is a sculptor, mixed media artist and designer. His work explores dualities in cultural, spiritual and psychological symbolism interpreted through a diasporic lens and abstracted around the aesthetics of craft and design. Baralaye received his BFA in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design and his MFA in Ceramics from the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Baralaye was awarded an honorable mention at the 2011 Gyeonggi International Ceramics Biennale and received a museum acquisition prize from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has exhibited in various solo and group shows domestically and internationally and is represented by David Klein Gallery in Detroit. Baralaye is currently and AICAD Teaching Fellow at the San Francisco Art Institute.

‍Nicole Archer, PhD researches contemporary art and material culture, with an emphasis in modern textile and garment histories. Further interests include critical and psychoanalytic theory, corporeal feminism, and performance studies. Currently, Nicole is writing a manuscript entitled Take Cover: Art, Materiality, and the War on Terror, which considers the myriad ways that textiles work to produce and maintain the limits of ‘legitimate’ versus ‘illegitimate’ forms of state violence.

Nicole also serves as an Assistant Professor in the History and Theory of Contemporary Art at the San Francisco Art Institute, where her teaching explores relations of politics and aesthetics through examinations of style, embodiment, and desire.

‍Punchcard Duo is a Bay-Area based jazz duo featuring Scott Takahashi and Spencer Handley. Scott Takahashi grew up in the south bay area, having the privilege of playing music with groups like the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars and the Stanford Jazz Orchestra. Scott currently works on the design team at Patreon. Spencer Handley studied music at UCLA and plays anything from jazz to folk music at venues all around the bay area. He produces original music independently and works as a software engineer at Patreon by day.
