About

Sweet and Dandy is an 8-week film series featuring an entertaining mix of documentaries, shorts and narratives complementing both exhibitions on view at Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) The Grace Jones Project and Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity. The films explore how fashion, music and performance are expressions of resistance and pleasure, defying confining interpretations of race and masculinity/femininity in global Black communities.

BROWN BOIS STAY STRONG (4 minutes, Candy Guinea, 2015) Castro, a masculine-of-center, queer woman, has overcome many obstacles to reclaim a gender identity that is authentic to who she really is. At 35 she decides to become pregnant and is concerned how this will shift her masculine presentation in a society where pregnancy is only represented by overt femininity.

This is followed by THE AGGRESSIVES (73 minutes, Daniel Peddle, 2005) which provides an insightful look at the little explored, yet highly dramatic subculture of lesbian butches and their "femme" counterparts who tow the line between gender definitions. This fascinating documentary features intimate and revealing interviews with six aggressive. Please note that this film contains explicit adult content.
