On a mission of culture, with a museum at her back

MoAD is more than just a place to hang art, Executive Director Denise Bradley says. It's a place to make cultural connections.

Denise Bradley went to a Branford Marsalis gig recently, but she couldn't stop thinking about work. She was at a basketball game, same scenario: "I was looking at all the young people there, and thinking about what else we can do in terms of competing." [SF Chronicle - more]

Slavery: InHuman History

Thru April 30

The exhibition will include Slavery in New York, the most ambitious exhibition ever assembled on slavery in New York, organized by the New-York Historical Society. Also included are documents, in some cases the first public viewing, on the impact of slavery in the Bay Area. Based on the original Slavery in New York exhibition, the traveling exhibition features nine heavily illustrated panels highlighting the history of slavery in New York and the story of the fight for freedom.    [more]

Bare Witness: Photographs by Gordon Parks

March 21 - July 1

Gordon Parks (b. 1912, Kansas--d.2006) documented crime and poverty, as well as its opposite - glamor. Parks was an African American photographer, filmmaker, and author who began working professionally in the 1940s. He contributed to magazines such as Life, tackling the harsh truth and dignity of the black urban and rural poor in the U.S. Parks selected the 73 photographs in this show as some of the finest examples of his work. Several programs at Stanford are associated with Bare Witness: Photographs of Gordon Parks. The exhibition and programs are free. [more]

African Americans from the neighboring Fillmore District, rural whites from the Midwest, and other societal outcasts began to fill the vacant neighborhood. A Timbuktu Funk Affair

The Global Education and Action Network (GLEAN), a non-profit organization that plans and guides global research expeditions around the world for teenagers, and its subsidiary, The Timbuktu Music Project, are holding its annual benefit concert. The all-ages event will raise funds for musical education and instruments in Mali, as well as this year’s youth expedition to West Africa, where Bay Area teens will learn about, and help document local culture, and especially music. Become a Museum Guide

Share MoAD with visitors of all ages in the MoAD Guide Program. Guides learn about the Museum’s unique immersive exhibitions, featured exhibitions and the Heritage Center in quarterly trainings. Must be able to commit 2 hours a month plus attend all exhibition trainings. To apply, email volunteer@moadsf.org.
