On 23 August 1791, an uprising of the enslaved Africans on the island of St Domingo (modern Haiti and the Dominican Republic) began. This revolt was a crucial event in the fight against slavery. Patterns: Traditional West African Textiles and The Art of Gee's Bend Quilts

August 9 - October 9

Juxtaposing these textiles from Gee’s Bend with traditional textiles from West Africa, visitors are invited to contemplate and question their parallels and similarities. Exhibition made possible through the generous support of Union Bank of California. More>

Participants will be able to create and take home their own quilt square. The African American Quilters Guild of Oakland will be sharing their stories of quilt making and the history and importance of Freedom Quilts during slavery. (Age 9-14 yrs.) More>

Beginners workshop for adults. Come learn the basic techniques of traditional African American quilt making such as strip, piecing and appliqué. Workshop led by Olaitan Callender-Scott. Workshop Fee $25. Materials will be provided. Space limited to 15 participants. More>

Become a Museum Guide

Share MoAD with visitors of all ages in the MoAD Guide Program. Guides learn about the Museum’s unique immersive exhibitions, featured exhibitions and the Heritage Center in quarterly trainings. Must be able to commit 2 hours a month plus attend all exhibition trainings. To apply, email volunteer@moadsf.org.
