Artists Lecture: Marcia Kure

Nigerian born artist Marcia Kure received her BA in painting from the University of Nigeria at Nsukka and has exhibited internationally with recent shows in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Japan, Nigeria and the United States. Her drawings, at once beautiful and disturbing, deal with issues relating to the artist’s personal experience as a woman, and mother, but also contemporary global events.  Currently on display at the Lisa Dent Gallery>

Gee’s Bend: A Movement Town

Gee’s Bend was known as a “Movement Town” to the scores of organizers and volunteers who worked to secure the right to vote in Alabama’s Black Belt counties. A panel featuring members of the Bay Area Veterans of the Civil Rights Movement who worked with either SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) or SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Council) will speak about their time in Gee’s Bend during the 1960’s.
