THIS WEEKEND - It Sounds Better in Amharic

Ethiopian comedian Yossi Vassa's one-man show is a personal account of the long journey on foot from Ethiopia to a refugee camp in Sudan, and finally to Israel. Nostalgic memories of life in Ethiopia are mixed with the often hilarious adjustments to life in modern day Israel. Members - free admission.

Gem Blues Series

The Gem Blues Series and Tribute is centered around Gem of the Ocean, the late August Wilson's Tony-nominated Best Play of 2005, which receives its Bay Area premiere at ACT and is directed by long-time August Wilson collaborator Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Special Lecture/Performance - August Wilson: Hitting For The Cycle

This special evening offers a moderated conversation with Harry J. Elam, Jr., Chair of the Stanford University Drama Department and author of the award-winning book The Past as Present in the Drama of August Wilson. Professor Elam will lead us through Wilson’s life and work, charting the major themes that tie the cycle together. To illustrate his observations, a selection of thrilling scenes and monologues from the range of Wilson’s work will be performed live by leading Bay Area actors.

Composer/Author Talk with Kate Clifford Larson and Marcus Shelby

The Salon at the Museum of the African Diaspora

Mr. Shelby is composing an oratorio based on Ms. Clifford Larson’s Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman. This is an opportunity to get an inside view of the creative collaborative process, part of MoAD’s presentation with Yerba Buena Arts and Events on the Harriet Tubman project, premiering May 2007.
