| The mission of the Museum of the African Diaspora is to promote the universal connection of humankind to Africa and to explore and appreciate the impact people of African descent have had on contemporary life the world over. MoAD utilizes art, culture and history to tell the story of the
African Diaspora in order to foster a greater understanding of human
history. This knowledge helps students respect the many cultures
present in today’s classroom. Teachers will be inspired after touring the museum with docents and attending workshops where they will learn to integrate art, language arts and history into their daily curriculum. The program focuses attention on low performing middle schools in
the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). Teachers will have the opportunity to participate in lectures, view art exhibits and leave the workshops with information and quality material for instruction. They will be able to develop objectives and plan effective lessons to meet the needs of students from all backgrounds. Participants will be able to interact with the professional development facilitators throughout the semester if they have any questions about the material. Workshop participants will be given a Museum guide packet that will have a list of Academic Content Standard for California State Board of Education, including Visual Arts, SFUSD History/Social Studies Standards, the Teacher's Curriculum Institute Standards, a description of each exhibit, questions to ask students at each exhibit, classroom activities, and resources. The workshops will also address the needs of GATE, ELL and Special Education students. Participants may receive unit credit for attending the workshops.
This will have to be negotiated with the SFUSD by individual teachers.
