Join us for a slide presentation and lecture by Bay Area collectors Dick and Beany Wezelman. For the past thirty years Dick and Beany have been traveling throughout Africa collecting and photographing indigenous art. The majority of their collection consists of African textiles and clothing. Several pieces from their personal collection will also be on display.

Please join us for a special event honoring Marcus Samuelsson, renowned chef and author of the newly published book The Soul of a New Cuisine: A Discovery of the Foods and Flavors of Africa. Marcus will be discussing his journey through Africa with photos, music and wine. Book signing to follow immediately.

Born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden by his adoptive parents, Samuelsson explores his native Africa in his deeply personal and stunningly beautiful book.

Millions of sophisticated coffee drinkers relish a good cup of coffee. But for every $3 cup of coffee, a coffee farmer typically only receives 3 cents. Most of the money goes to the four giant conglomerates which control the coffee market.

Black Gold follows Tadesse Meskela, General Manager of the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union in Ethiopia as he tries to secure a living wage for the 70,000 coffee farmers he represents. Tracing the tangled trail from the 2 billion cups of coffee consumed each day back to the coffee farmers who produce the beans, Black Gold exposes how international commodities markets are rigged against the nations of the global South.

After seeing Black Gold, coffee will never taste the same. A sip of cappuccino will remind viewers of the farmers who grew the beans and of their own power to pressure corporations where it hurts most-the bottom line.

AFRO-LATINA VOICES - An evening celebrating the lives and contributions of two Afro-Latina singers.

Tribute to Toña la Negra. Director, Chuy Varela presents a multi-media tribute to Mexico's famous Afro-Mestiza singer, Toña la Negra (1912-81) and the immortal sound of her romantic Caribbean African-based bolero music.

Susana Baca: Memoria Viva This film documents Susana Baca's efforts to champion the performance and preservation of her Afro-Peruvian heritage, through the lando, a highly evocative musical style with a mixture of Spanish, Indigenous and African rhythms.

Virtual Exhibit by Dr. Bogumil Jewsiewicki, winner of the African Studies Association (ASA) 2006 Distinguished Africanist Award. A short multi-media exhibit featuring a historical anthropology of a modern, urban and industrial African society (one century old.) For Lubumbashi and its region (Katanga) the project is important because the demise of mining industry means a profound transformation of the society and stresses the need to confront the past and the present.
