Grounding the Past

Following the thread of Congolese Dance & Music

September 17, 2009 ::: 6pm-8pm

MoAD ::: 3rd Floor

Reinforcing the bonds between the individual and her village, Latanya D. Tigner, Maïmouna Coulibaly, and Muisi-kongo Malonga present 3 different works

in honor of the influences and traditions of Central Africa.

Finding strength and inspiration in the multi-layered stories of a branch of the Congolese family tree, Latanya D. Tigner combines contemporary technique with traditional Congolese movement to explore what it means to find oneself facing great loss.

Accompanied by acapella vocals from Muisi-kongo Malonga, "Untitled" moves from solitude to community, isolation to strength, a reminder of our ability to move forward.

Muisi-kongo S. Malonga is "the village" personified.

As the Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer of Fua Dia Congo, Muisi-kongo Malonga ensures that the traditions taught to her from birth remain vibrantly alive.

Dissolving the boundary between audience and performer, Muisi-kongo, in partnership with her brother Kiazi Malonga, encourage the audience to get up and go deeper into the Zebola (ritual/healing) and Air Pionnier (ritual/social) rhythms.

Maïmouna Coulibaly is a dance/theater artist with both feet on the pulse of the urban French-African Diaspora.

Mixing up traditional styles with new moves from the dance floors of Paris, Maïmouna leads us through Soukous all the way to Coupé-Décalé.

DJ Chief Boima collaborates with Maïmouna to keeps things moving as he brings the sounds of Little Baobab's "Paris Dakar International".
