Join us for our monthly series, The African Diaspora Film Club. Modeled after our African Book Club, we will meet once a month to discuss a film that we have all viewed in advance of the discussion. The conversation will be moderated by Cornelius Moore, co-director of California Newsreel and film series curator at MoAD.

We will be choosing a selection of films previously screened at MoAD. You may have already seen it, or this may be your first introduction. In either case, join us on the second Sunday of the month for a lively discussion of the film.

In anticipation of the upcoming political conventions, we will be discussing the documentary CHISHOLM ’72: UNBOUGHT & UNBOSSED (Shola Lynch, 77 minutes, 2004).

Recalling a watershed event in US politics, this Peabody Award-winning documentary takes an in-depth look at the 1972 presidential campaign of Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress and the first to seek nomination for the highest office in the land.

Shunned by the political establishment and the media, this longtime champion of marginalized Americans asked for support from people of color, women, gays, and young people newly empowered to vote at the age of 18. Chisholm's bid for an equal place on the presidential dais generated strong, even racist opposition. Yet her challenge to the status quo and her message about exercising the right to vote struck many as progressive and positive.

‍Filmmaker Shola Lynch will join us for the discussion.

Shola Lynch is a Peabody and Emmy award-winning filmmaker, and a 2016 member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She makes films about audacious women, and in particular black women. She is best known for her documentaries, Chisholm ’72 – Unbought & Unbossed (2004) and Free Angela & All Political Prisoners (2012).

She is also the Curator for the Moving Image & Recorded Sound Division archive at the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Through the work of rediscovering this large and unique collection, she hopes to inspire an army of storytellers from students and scholars to artists of all kinds.

She believes in the value of preserving history and its power in storytelling.
