Enjoy Free Admission to our exhibitions, En Mas’: Carnival and Performance Art of the Caribbean, Otra Mas’: 40 Years of Carnaval in San Francisco, and MoAD Emerging Artist Program presents Simone Bailey: Let There Be Darkness as MoAD joins the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the California Historical Society for Art, Drink, & Be Merry! Third Thursdays in Yerba Buena.
Join us at 6:30pm in the MoAD Salon for a conversation about our current exhibition En Mas: Carnival and Performance Art in the Caribbean with Curator Claire Tancons and Professor Shannon Jackson (Rhetoric and Theater, Dance and Performance Studies, UC Berkeley). EN MAS’ introduces performance art with a focus on the influence that Carnival and related masquerading traditions in and of the Caribbean and its diasporas have had on contemporary performance discourse and practice, in both the artistic and curatorial realms. Tancons and Jackson (a contributor to the EN MAS’ catalogue) will discuss this innovative performance-based exhibition and reveal the many layers of social critique and protest embedded in the Carnival tradition. The program will include a wine reception.
Be sure to pick up a sticker at MoAD for special Third Thursday all-night happy hours at participating bars and restaurants. The third Thursday of each month in downtown San Francisco’s Yerba Buena neighborhood will be a monthly outing full of arts, food, and drink! Wander the blocks around Yerba Buena Gardens to soak in art and music.
