About

Museum of the African Diaspora, SFJAZZ and Yerba Buena Gardens Festival present a Six-Week Lecture Series with John Santos

ROOTS OF SALSA: UNSUNG HEROES

For every Celia Cruz, Mongo Santamaría, and Tito Puente, there are scores of musicians, composers, and arrangers whose names fall between the cracks; warriors who dedicated their lives to the art, lifting the bar, lifting their communities, and leaving a treasure of memories, lessons, and documentation. Their contributions to the legacy of Afro-Caribbean culture as a living history and philosophy are as priceless as they are unrecognized. They are the unsung heroes.

August 15 & August 29 courses include live music demonstration

AUG 8: Ráices Afro-Cubanas

AUG 15: Cuba Clásica w/ special guests Cuarteto Colibrí

AUG 22: NY of the 40’s & 50’s – Época de Oro

AUG 29: Puerto Rico del Alma w/ special guests Cuarteto Pedro Pastrana

SEP 5: NY – Cuna de la Salsa

SEP 12: Contemporary Pillars
