Image: Lorna Simpson, 9 Props, Lithograph on Felt, Collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer

Please join us for a conversation with one of the leading artists of our time, Lorna Simpson. Her work is featured in the current exhibition Second Look, Twice: Selections from the Collection of the Jordan D. Schnitzer Family Foundation. Moderated by MoAD's Director of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs Emily Kuhlmann, the conversation with Lorna Simpson and Jordan D. Schnitzer will examine her genre-defying body of work, and address the relationship between an artist and her collector.

Lorna Simpson came to prominence in the 1980s with her pioneering approach to conceptual photography. Simpson’s early work – particularly her striking juxtapositions of text and staged images – raised questions about the nature of representation, identity, gender, race and history that continue to drive the artist’s expanding and multi-disciplinary practice today. She deftly explores the medium’s umbilical relation to memory and history, both central themes within her work. Her works have been exhibited at and are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Haus der Kunst; Munich amongst others. Important international exhibitions have included the Hugo Boss Prize at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany, and the 56th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy. Lorna Simpson is represented by Hauser & Wirth. Image: James Wang

At age 14, Jordan D. Schnitzer bought his first work of art from his mother’s Portland, Oregon contemporary art gallery, evolving into his lifelong avocation as collector. He began collecting contemporary prints and multiples in earnest in 1988. Today, the collection exceeds 12,000 works and includes many of today’s most important contemporary artists. It has grown to be the country’s largest private print collection. He and his Family Foundation generously lend work from the collections to qualified institutions and has organized over 100 exhibitions and has art exhibited at over 150 museums. Mr. Schnitzer is also President of Harsch Investment Properties, a privately owned real estate investment company based in Portland, Oregon, which owns and operates over 24 million square feet of office, multi-tenant industrial, multi-family and retail properties in six western states. The program will include a book signing of Lorna Simpson Collages (Chronicle Books 2018)This program is made possible by the generous support of the Jordan D.
