About the Program

In celebration of Black History Month and the closing weekend of the current exhibitions on view at MoAD, we bring, along with SFJAZZ, a concert with Martin Luther McCoy. Come and see Amoako Boafo: Soul of Black Folks and Billie Zangewa: Thread for a Web Begun as McCoy closes out the exhibitions with a multimedia presentation and performance.

Having performed as a founding member of Moon Medicin (a multimedia concept ensemble of curated sound and image) along with lead visionary artist Sanford Biggers for over a decade, San Francisco native Martin Luther McCoy will bless the space with a performative excavation of Amoako Boafo: Soul of Black Folks. With original and repurposed found film and video as the backdrop along with original music, Luther comes to MoAD to close the exhibition with his signature mix of blues drenched R&B and griot storytelling from a classic soul point of view. A Little X Productions, co-founded by McCoy, will be curating his performance in the MoAD Salon. Martin rose to international attention for his extensive work with The Roots, founded the Rebel Soul Music label in 1999, and is now preparing to release his fourth studio album. He joined the SFJAZZ Collective in 2019 and continues to be an active member of the band.
