About
Join us for a Co-Presentation of Museum of the African Diaspora and CubaCaribe
Afro-Cuban religion, drum and dance traditions, and visual arts are vital sources of creativity and effective means for resisting oppression that have sustained black Cubans and enriched Cuban culture in general from the colonial era until today. Percussionist John Santos, dancer and priest Jose Francisco Barroso, painter Pablo Soto Campoamor, and scholar/performer Umi Vaughan will dialogue about the role Afro-Cuban arts play in community building, healing, and cultural (re)construction, among other topics. Changó, the Yoruba deity of thunder, justice, drumming, and dance will be a focal point for our discussion, which will include elements of ritual, images, and music.
This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Drapetomania: Grupo Antillano and the Art of Afro Cuba. It is co-presented by CubaCaribe (cubacaribe.org) and made possible by the generous support of the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
