About
Join us for a screening of Barry Jenkins’ (Moonlight) first feature film Medicine for Melancholy (2008). The film’s protagonists are an African American man and woman whose relationship begins with a one-night stand at a Potrero Hill party. On the following day, the two criss-cross San Francisco, deepening their intimacy with each hour. The city’s landmarks, including the Museum of the African Diaspora, are photographed with great reverence and beauty.
Following the screening, there will be audience discussion to consider the film’s chief ambitions: to represent an African American love affair and to raise the specter of gentrification and cross-cultural relationships in the city.
