MALUALA (Sérgio Giral, 1979, 95 minutes)
Sergio Giral made several historical Cuban feature films set before slavery was abolished on the island. The third in a trilogy, the epic movie MALUALA focuses on the rebellious palenques (remote communities of escaped Africans) and the various efforts by the Spanish colonial authorities to undermine and destroy them. Apart from Sara Gómez, Giral was the only Afro-Cuban directing feature films at the Cuban Film Institute in the 1970s.
