OPEN MIC THIRD THURSDAYS continue in conjunction with Culture for Community. In the spirit of celebrating intergenerational knowledge and storytelling, join us for an evening of spoken word and playback theater, featuring poets Tureeda Mikell, Nazelah Jamison, and Yujane Chen. Participate or just watch!

This Open Mic is hosted in partnership with the Neighborly Project. The Neighborly Project is an alliance of professional artists, creative arts therapists, and social justice advocates who use radical hospitality and playback theater to promote community mental health.

Tureeda Mikell, Story Medicine Woman, published poet, Qigong Healer, workshop leader, storyteller, lyricist, astrologer and performance artist, and Bay Area Writing Project Teacher Consultant, has published 72 CA Poets in the Schools student anthologies since 1989; has performed in many schools, libraries and universities including, the Lawrence Hall and Golden Gate Academy of Sciences, Randell, Oakland, and The DeYoung Museums, and was featured storyteller for National Association of Black Storytellers, and poet/storyteller in Beijing China with Eth-Noh-Tec Nu Wa Delegation in collaboration with the University of Beijing, 2018.

Nazelah Jamison is a performance poet, actor, vocalist, and emcee. She is an East Coast transplant, former organizer of the Oakland Poetry Slam and sometimes reluctant superhero. Her first book of poetry, Evolutionary Heart, was released in Fall of 2016 on Nomadic Press.

Nazelah gives the best hugs in the Bay Area.

Yujane Chen is a poet, student organizer, teaching artist, and queer migrant alien from Taiwan. They are a member of the 2018-2019 CalSLAM Team and the curator of Dispatches From The Stars, a literary space for migrant artists of color. Their work appears in Black Warrior Review, the Adroit Journal, Bettering American Poetry, and others.

A Kundiman Fellow and a Pink Door Fellow, they are currently earning a B.A. in Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley, where they are a Library and Archive Intern at the Multicultural Community Center on campus. They believe their revolution begins with listening.
