About

Join us for an evening of performance with Sylvia Arthur and her compelling solo show Obama and Me

While Barack Obama is fulfilling his American Dream as the first Black president of the United States, Sylvia Arthur, a Black Brit, is in Brussels in pursuit of the European version. Working at the political heart of Europe, tasked with promoting Freedom of Movement, she zigzags the continent championing the benefits of a borderless Union. But as the President faces resistance to his agenda, so does she, as nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism sweep through Europe, and the world, and dreams begin to crumble.

Journeying through Europe, Africa, and the United States, this one-woman show takes on the big global issues of the day in a powerful, compelling narrative that explores the meaning of identity, politics, power, and belonging in the post-post-racial 21st century.

Sylvia Arthur (sylviaarthur.co.uk) is a Black British writer whose essays and plays explore identity, diaspora, politics, and place through the prism of popular culture. She's currently working on her first book, African, & Other Curse Words, a collection of interconnected essays about sacrifice and empathy, compassion and belonging, individual guilt and collective shame, and the manipulative power of language. Her one-woman show, Obama & Me, (obamaandmeshow.com) is currently on tour.
Sylvia will be in residence at Little Paper Planes in October.
