About

Why has the loss of D’Angelo felt different, and what is in the sound of his music that gave us that particular feeling? Join “Dr. Wes,” Founder of The Jazz & Democracy Project ®, to learn the answer to these questions and more. Part One of “The D’Angelo Lectures” begins with the 2025 Ryan Coogler blockbuster, Sinners, and grapples with the notion that “D’Angelo was a Sammie” (Evelyn From The Internets). Then we trace D’Angelo’s sound back to West and Central-West Africa, through the blues and gospel traditions, and to legendary Hip Hop producer, J Dilla. If time allows, Part Two will pay tribute to the influence of Oakland, CA, specifically, Raphael Saadiq, other East Bay Prince alumni, and The Hawkins Family. Whether new to D’Angelo or a longtime fan, you will leave this special event with a deeper understanding of why D’Angelo is considered a master of time and a diamond of the Black American Music tradition.
