About
In collaboration with SHACK15, the Museum of the African Diaspora invites you to join us for an engaging conversation with artist Adrian Burrell, recipient of the SHACK15 Art Prize. Burrell’s multidisciplinary practice explores memory, migration, and Black identity through photography, film, and installation. A third-generation Oakland artist and grandchild of the Great Migration, his work draws from a rich family archive to create evocative spaces rooted in resilience, kinship, and cultural memory.
The conversation will also feature Jessica Monette, whose practice spans installation, sculpture, and painting, examining themes of memory, resilience, and the layered histories of the African Diaspora through deeply material-driven work. Together, Burrell and Monette will reflect on how lineage, materiality, and contemporary storytelling continue to shape their artistic practices and visions for the future.
The discussion will be moderated by Cornelia Stokes, Assistant Curator at MoAD, whose work centers contemporary artists of the African Diaspora through exhibitions, research, and public dialogue.
