About
MADAME SATÃ (99 minutes, 2002, Karim Ainouz. In Portuguese with English subtitles). The legendary Brazilian Joao Francisco dos Santos (1900-1976) was a larger than life malandro (stylish gangster). A son of formerly enslaved parents, he frequented Rio’s seedy entertainment district. He was boldly gay, a masculine ex-con, a drag performer, and a master of the Afro-Brazilian martial art capoeira. Dos Santos (powerfully portrayed by Brazilian star Lazaro Ramos) courageously expressed “I was born an outlaw that's how I'll live." We present MADAME SATÃ in recognition of San Francisco Carnaval.

The films explore how fashion, music and performance are expressions of resistance and pleasure, defying confining interpretations of race and masculinity/femininity in global Black communities.
