About

Join us for one of the culminating events of our 2022 Poets-in-Residence program. We invite you to an evening of student poetry readings by the Spoken Arts class at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts (SOTA).

Throughout the four-month residency, 2022 Poets-in-Residence Tureeda Mikell and Nefertiti Asanti have led poetry workshops with the Spoken Arts class at SOTA. This student reading will celebrate the original work created by the students throughout the residency. Join us for a delightful evening of poetry, as we celebrate the youth voices in our community!

About the Poets-in-Residence Program

The Museum of the African Diaspora Poets-in-Residence program was founded in 2018. This program provides writers with opportunities to respond to contemporary art of the African Diaspora and extend the reach of the museum through programming and educational workshops with local high school students. The residency welcomes writers to pursue their own writing projects in addition to responding to the artistic collections. The residency does require that writers implement a school-based writing program in partnership with Ruth Asawa School of the Arts. Residencies last for one academic semester or 4 months. The workshops include at least 6 site visits and one visit with students at the museum. There are also two culminating public programs: a student reading and a Poet-in-Residence reading.

About Ruth Asawa School of the Arts

The Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts is a college preparatory school that provides an experience uniquely rooted in dynamic arts programs that reflect our city’s cultural diversity. Promising young artists and thinkers collaborate with teachers, professional artists, and their community to explore and develop their personal identity through art, insight, and movements that reflect and influence the world around them. Academic and Arts classes inform each other, balancing creative play with dedicated discipline, and building expertise in both classical and contemporary areas of study. Students devote themselves to studying how art, academic inquiry, and authentic expression impact civic engagement and social justice in local and global communities. Ruth Asawa SOTA is dedicated to the values of Respect, Openness, Safety and, Engagement.
