Poets-In-Residence 2024 Application

About

Thank you for your interest in the MoAD Poets-in-Residence program. Applications for the 2024 residency are closed. Selected residents will be notified and announced publicly in early April.

The Poets-in-Residence initiative invites poets to engage deeply with the art of the African Diaspora, creating works in response to our exhibitions and participating in community and educational workshops.

This year, two Poets-in-Residence will be selected to participate in a four-month writing residency from September 1 – December 31, 2024. This program was originally founded in 2018 to provide writers with opportunities to respond to contemporary art of the African Diaspora and extend the reach of the museum through programming and educational workshops with local high school students. The residency welcomes writers to pursue their own writing projects in addition to responding to MoAD’s current exhibitions. The residency requires that writers implement a school-based writing program in partnership with The Ruth Asawa School of the Arts.

Residencies last for one academic semester or 4 months. The workshops include at least 6 site visits to the school and one visit with students at the museum. Poets-in-Residence will engage with the public through community writing workshops and culminating public programs including a student poetry reading and resident poetry reading.

For the term of the residency, each resident receives:

  • A monthly stipend of $1500 (for 4 months)
  • Free access to the museum exhibitions, programs, and events
  • A 10% discount on all Museum store purchases
  • Publicity for public programs on social media
  • Staff support for programming
  • Access to learning more about the work of the Museum of the African Diaspora from curatorial and education staff
  • Flexible, drop-in access to MoAD and a designated workspace at the museum
