At MoAD, our mission is to place art and artists of the African Diaspora at the center of the global cultural conversation. For two decades, MoAD has uplifted the voices of Black artists — through groundbreaking exhibitions, artist residencies, and programs that educate and inspire thousands each year.
Now, as we honor this 10-year milestone, the EAP continues to reflect MoAD’s commitment to supporting, exhibiting, and amplifying the work of Black artists living and working in the Bay Area. Beauty Plus commemorates the closure of the 31 year-old, second Black-owned beauty supply in New Haven, Connecticut. Over three months, Ross documented the store’s final days with her 4 x 5 film camera, honoring owner Mel, while revealing a layered narrative of small business ownership, communal care, and Black survival.
Ancestral Echoes—Crops of Empire explores the role of African Americans in cultivating the South’s foundational cash crops: cotton, tobacco, sugar, and rice. Through archival imagery, textiles, and ritual materials, Broxton honors ancestral labor, resistance, and cultural endurance.
Dorian Reid creates ceramic sculptures, protest ephemera, and performance elements exploring civil rights, animal welfare, and her familial connection to the Black Panthers. Her "Black Cat Revolution" merges activism, community, and creative storytelling.
This exhibition explores survival, care, and illumination within Black womanhood. Rasheed transforms glass, print, and photography into a language of resistance, asserting healing, rest, and tenderness as political and radical acts.
