Application Process
WHO SHOULD APPLY
Emerging Black artists whose work contributes to contemporary art of the African Diaspora. Now open worldwide, EAP will select three artists living and working in the Bay Area and one based elsewhere in the U.S. or internationally. State where you live and work.
PROGRAM SUPPORT
- $10,000 honorarium per artist.
- $1,500 maximum for artwork fabrication, framing, and exhibition furniture beyond MoAD’s inventory; existing furniture is available free.
- One solo exhibition in MoAD’s second-floor Salon during September 2027–July 2028.
- Collaborative exhibition development with the Chief of Curatorial Affairs and Public Programs and/or an emerging curator, supported by the exhibitions team.
- Writing/design support, professional development, exhibition documentation, marketing, and press support.
- Studio access/support beginning in 2027; arrangements confirmed with awardees.
- Travel support as required, arranged with MoAD.
- One artist-developed public program organized with MoAD’s Public Programs team. The $2,500 maximum includes supplies, A/V, food/beverages, and collaborator travel/honoraria. Opening/closing receptions are not included. Additional events require independent funding and coordination with MoAD’s events team.
The artist outside the Bay Area will collaborate remotely and travel to MoAD for installation and programming. MoAD covers shipping for that artist’s artwork.
HOW TO APPLY
Submit the following:
Project proposal PDF: Include a working title, a 500-750-word proposal, and an artwork checklist. Describe:
- Themes, ideas, materials, and processes.
- Connections to your practice, why the project matters now, and its relationship to contemporary art of the African Diaspora.
- Proposed works, at least 50% complete at application, and a timeline to complete all works by August 1, 2027.
- Special display, equipment, furniture, packing, or shipping needs.
The work list must identify each sample’s title, medium, dimensions, date, completion status, weight where relevant, and completion timeline. It does not count toward the word limit. Exhibitions are curated collaboratively after selection.
Work samples: 3–10 samples showing your practice and project. JPG images, MP4 video, MP3 audio, and other SlideRoom-supported files are welcome. Videos: five minutes maximum each.
Resume/CV PDF: Relevant exhibitions, publications, education, awards, and professional experience.
Website/social media links or handles, if available.
SELECTION
A jury reviews artistic strength, proposal depth and clarity, alignment with MoAD’s focus, and feasibility within program resources and space. Review: January 2027.
EXHIBITION REQUIREMENTS
Projects must fit agreed budgets and available resources. MoAD cannot exceed the $1,500 fabrication/framing/furniture allowance or other agreed budgets; EAP does not commission large-scale work. Any local and nonlocal packing, transport, shipping, installation, and production milestones will be agreed with artists.
The Salon also hosts programs, gatherings, and private events where food/drink may be served. Floor-based works may require temporary movement. Artworks must arrive installation-ready, including printing/framing. Artists participate in installation, deinstallation, and programming on schedules coordinated with MoAD.
Artists retain copyright and grant MoAD image reproduction permission for publicity, marketing, merchandise, and education under the artist agreement.
