‍

Simone Jacques, also known as DJ Taboo is a multifaceted artist, DJ, vibe curator, and creative director. From Haitian born New York raised father and Mexican born San Francisco raised mother, Taboo was made in San Francisco’s Mission District. Her African Diasporic sound is distinct, and brought to life by the cultural fusion of her parents and AfroLatina upbringing.

‍

Her rhythms of resistance embody why she calls herself taboo, as she prioritizes Black feminism through cultivating third spaces for Black and brown bodies to move freely, and uses music as storytelling for legacies of Black queer griots around the globe.

‍

With a Bay Area bass, Taboo merges nostalgia from genres such as funk, oldies, freestyle, R&B, with the Afrofuturism found in Afrobeats, Baile funk, Perreo, and Salsa. Immersing listeners into a zambo consciousness, she is genre-fluid and is cultivating cultural movements of community one dance floor at a time.

‍

‍

You will have free access to our current exhibitions: Dewey Crumpler: Sonic Lineages, After the Island: Ornament & Ceramic Practice in the Jamaican Diaspora, and Dorian Reid: Calling All Cats.
