LECTURE & DEMONSTRATION | The Negro Leagues and the Blues with Marcus Shelby
In advance of his latest YBG Festival commission, Marcus Shelby will present a lecture/demonstration on his research into the glorious, uplifting and heartbreaking story of African-Americans and the national pastime during the Jim Crow era. This research helped shape the 80-minute jazz composition inspired by the character, love, courage, brilliance, failure, and humor of Negro League players who made far-reaching but oft-overlooked contributions to American life during the years from Reconstruction through the 1950s. The lecture will include a short music demonstration and is sure to inspire you to attend the September 8th concert!
Presented by Museum of the African Diaspora and Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, with support from The MAP Fund
Free premiere performance of Shelby’s suite is on Saturday, September 8, 2018, 1–2:30pm, at Yerba Buena Gardens, Mission St @ 3rd-4th Sts, San Francisco.
