About

Join MoAD and SFJAZZ for a performance in MoAD's gallery with Taylor McFerrin, son of singer Bobby McFerrin, Brainfeeder recording artist, producer, and keyboardist McFerrin who brings his mix of soul, jazz, and electronic music.

This performance will be held in our Third Floor Gallery where our current exhibition JoeSam.: Text Messages is on view. JoeSam. designed album covers for his friend Bobby McFerrin, their children grew up together in San Francisco, and their families remain close. In tribute to this Bay Area relationship, we are honored to present Taylor McFerrin surrounded by JoeSam.'s artwork.

A guided tour of MoAD's exhibitions will be held prior to the performance. This tour is restricted to ticket-holders for the 2pm performance. Space is limited, registration is required. You will receive information on how to register for the tour upon purchasing tickets for the performance.

Eldest son of celebrated singer Bobby McFerrin, Taylor McFerrin is a cutting edge DJ, producer, keyboardist, beatboxer, and composer. Influenced by 70s soul, jazz fusion, and electronic music, McFerrin has come so far since his recorded debut as an infant on his father’s self-titled 1982 album, performing alongside his Soulquarian idols The Roots, Erykah Badu, and Talib Kweli, as well as jazz crossover stars Robert Glasper and José James. McFerrin’s 2008 EP, Broken Vibes, established his unique, soulful aesthetic with an evocative mix of vocal beats, electric piano, synthesizers, and voice. On the heels of his Ninja Tune single, “Place in My Heart,” the multi-instrumentalist released his debut full-length album, Early Riser, on superstar producer Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. The album is a tour-de-force, combining deep grooves and densely layered soundscaping with guest appearances by Glasper, Brazilian piano giant César Carmargo Mariano, bass master Thundercat, vocalists Nai Palm and Emily King, as well as McFerrin’s famous father. Currently performing around the world with Glasper’s all-star R+R=Now project, Taylor McFerrin is an artist on the rise, channeling the past to build a vital musical future.

This program is presented in conjunction with the current exhbition JoeSam.: Text Messages, on view through March 3, 2024.

This program is presented in partnership with SFJAZZ.
