About

Join curators Jacqueline Francis, Kathy Zarur, and MoAD’s Docents for a discussion of Where Is Here!

Where Is Here evokes the real and conceptual space through which we travel. The exhibition presents the works of contemporary artists who are developing personal and engaged visual and musical systems to claim, make, and describe space. The imagery is both straightforward and poetic.

Jacqueline Francis teaches US art history and researches critical questions about minority identities and identification represented in historical and contemporary visual culture. She is the author of Making Race: Modernism and “Racial Art” in America (2012). She is an Associate Professor in the Graduate Program in Visual and Critical Studies and the Department of Painting and Drawing at the California College of the Arts.

Kathy Zarur is a curator and art historian with a focus on the art, visual culture and the growing museum industry in the Middle East. She was Assistant Curator at the 2011 Sharjah Biennial (United Arab Emirates). In her research, Zarur considers the historic status and recent reception to work by artists from the Middle East in the mainstream, Western art world contexts. She teaches contemporary art at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco.

Where is Here was on view at MoAD Oct 26,2016 – Apr 02, 2017.
